The original Space Quest was an attempt by two Sierra programmers to create a parody of both science fiction and adventure games, and it worked. It worked well. It may have worked TOO well. The game spawned no less than five sequels and developed a huge following among adventure game fans. Its scope and popularity are probably second only to Sierra's flagship series, King's Quest, among all of the company's adventure game properties, and Space Quest arguably had the dignity to end before...

So, what do you suppose you get when you cross Resident Evil 4, Shenmue, and Twin Peaks? The answer took the form of a game released in February of 2010; a low budget survival horror game from a small Japanese studio. Originally known as Rainy Woods in 2007, and given the name Red Seeds Profile upon release in Japan, the version of the game released in America was called Deadly Premonition. Developed by Access Games, and headed up by game director Hidetaka Suehiro (better known as SWERY),...

In 1994, there was Star Trek Generations, a pretty good Trek movie up until the last act, when the plot stops returning making sense's calls, and Captain Kirk shows up in a --in my humble opinion-- completely counterproductive and undesirable last moment of glory. Good movie, but I think cutting out the entire Kirk storyline and the thereby unnecessary time travel parts would've made it far better. But never mind that. Three years after the release of the movie, there was this game, Star Trek...

The Warriors is a 3D Brawler from Rockstar Games released in late 2005 for the PS2 and XBox systems. It's the 3D transition of the side-scrolling beat 'em up that Final Fight: Streetwise really should have been. The Warriors is based on a movie from 1979, which is in turn based on a book from 1965. The Warriors are a street gang based out of Coney Island, and the events of the game/movie cover their interactions with the other gangs of New York. The game is a tie-in to the movie, explaining the...

Silent Hill: The Arcade is an hour-long railshooter about a spooky boat or something. It's similar to House of the Dead and based off the Silent Hill franchise. It's the only SH game to deviate from the usual survival horror style, aside from the Play Novel, which no one seems to like anyway, and now Shattered Memories, which everyone's pretty divided over. The game was released in Japan in August 2007, and released in the UK in 2008. It's got tons of recycled monsters, levels, and bosses, so...

What is Super Mario World? Super Mario World was a pack-in launch title platformer and Killer App for the Super Famicom and Super Nintendo Entertainment System. If you need to know more about that, the Wikipedia article is here . What's important here is that it's a classic platformer that I've played far too much, and was inspired to play an LP through by Vicas' Super Mario 64 LP , which he has been playing with his feet. What is the gimmick? There actually ended up being several gimmicks by...

Let's Play Star Trek Online! It's a game with some bizarre problems (not the least of which: it thinks it's an MMORPG) which, nonetheless, still manages to be fairly entertaining. Q: Wait, Poptarts, you said this was an MMORPG? Isn't Let's Playing an MMORPG kinda stupid? Yeah, it would be-if I considered Star Trek Online to be an MMORPG. It really isn't (or, rather, it is in the same way that Dawn of War II is a real-time strategy game). Honestly, STO is a single-player story-based game where...

In honor of Sonic's Birthday and the announcement of his bizzare new game , I'd like to share a weird classic remake that never made it to market: The Sega CD 32X version of Sonic 2 called Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Special Edition. This was one of only six games created specially for the horrible system that required the unholy combination of a Genesis, 32x, and a Sega CD adapter. At first, it seems pretty similar to regular Sonic 2, but there are several design changes that were made to take...

Punch-Out!! for the Wii was released early in the summer of 2009. It is more of a reimagining of the original NES Punch-Out!! then a completely new game. This does not mean that it doesn't bring anything new to the table. The controls are tighter, boxers actually have personalities, and there are new modes as well. For more info then I have the patience to put here refer to this . Original Archived Let's Play available at the Let's Play Archive

Grandia 3 is a PS2 game made by those guys down at Game Arts in 2005. It's pretty overlooked for an RPG and a lot of people thought it's wasn't that great compared to others but we still like it nonetheless. It's colorful, it's charming, it's got some neat characters, a pretty neat story even if they didn't know all what to do with it and a unique battle system. I find it unique in that it focuses not only on the main combat (dealing damage, healing) but also on a meta-battle of gauge...

The year was 2004. Call of Duty had yet to reach critical mass; Epic Games were still picking out the right shades of brown and grey for Gears of War; and James Bond fans were still licking the wounds of Die Another Day from little over a year previous. EA, in an odd stroke of genius, decided to forgo the idea of making the next interactive Bond adventure another first-person shooter, instead opting to develop Everything or Nothing as a third-person action game, featuring more varied...

Twilight Princess is a 2006 installment in the Legend of Zelda franchise. It was initially intended for release in 2005 on the GameCube, but development was held back in order to redesign the game for the then-upcoming Wii console. It was ultimately released for both consoles with the Wii version having fairly rudimentary motion controls, pointing/aiming being smooth as butter and everything else just being "waggle". The game is a (slight) point of contention among several people and...

Why this game, rather than the others in the series? Well, GTA 3 doesn't have motorcycles, and San Andreas is just too big. Besides that, I picked Vice City because I just felt like it. Hey, how about running cool mods for extra cars and stuff? No mods. Mainly because, in my experience, they make things more crashy. Also most people probably played the PS2 version, which couldn't have any mods. Are you doing a 100% run? No. No way in hell. I doubt I'll even get 20 packages. I'll do all the...

Darkwing Duck? Looks like Batman turned into a duck. That is exactly what Disney was going for when they made this cartoon series. A Batman-esque crime fighter whose punny remarks were as cringe-worthy as his fighting abilities. The King's Quest Wiki tells many sad stories concerning the eighth entry in the series, including the reason for the lack of a Roman numeral - Roberta Williams didn't want people to associate this travesty with the earlier, good games in the series. Eschewing standard combat and grotesque monsters for traditional Japanese-style ghosts who can only be exorcised with the powers of the mysterious Camera Obscura, these games are probably the closest thing in look and feel to a Japanese horror film you can find on a console. Fatal Frame 2:...

This game is very similar to the original game. The difference is in the dungeons, which have all been remixed for extreme difficulty. That's what is different. Just the dungeons. They are harder. The rest of the game is identical but the dungeons are all crazy now and the puzzles are really tricky. HEY. LISTEN. THE DUNGEONS ARE HARDER NOW. THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE. We tried to play this entire game in one sitting. Meanwhile, a nearby DVD player was churning through The Lord of the Rings: Extended...

Shadow of the Colossus takes place nearing the edge of the known world, in an area known only as "The Forbidden Land". It is here that a demon (or god of sorts), known as Dormin, resides. Dormin, having the power to bring back the dead, is approached by the protagonist, Wander, who makes a deal with the entity. If Wander slays sixteen colossi who roam the lands, Dormin will revive a girl, known as Mono, whose body Wander carries with him. However, these colossi are living mountains,...

You probably know this game. But for the few who maybe do not... Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is a 2003 third person 'action adventure' by Ubisoft Montreal (developers of other good game such as Assassin's Creed and the Splinter Cell series) and a continuation of the iconic Prince of Persia series. The last game in this series before it, Prince of Persia 3D, was a horrible failure, so the developers had to avoid tanking again to not doom the franchise - and by god, they did a marvelous job...

Silent Hill 2 is the second installment of the Silent Hill series and the first game of the series to be released for Sony PlayStation 2. Paper Mario was released in North America in 2001 by the developer Intelligent Systems; known for their fantastic WarioWare, Fire Emblem and Advanced Wars series. The game is the first in a series which continued on the Gamecube (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door) and the Wii (Super Paper Mario). The game has been criticized for being ridiculously easy, and it is. I'll be playing the game and commentating with Wogturt. Original Archived Version available at The Let's Play Archive .

The 7th Guest was an early CD-ROM game for the PC, released in April 1993. I personally wouldn't consider it a 'horror game', but a creepy and atmospheric puzzle/adventure game. The gameplay generally involves exploring, finding clues, solving puzzles, being subjected to puns, and putting together the mystery of what happened in the mansion. Although it's a pretty famous title, I consider it greatly underappreciated. Original Archived Version available at the Let's Play Archive .

Many years after the memorable trainwreck that was Ys III, Falcom had been rather quiet on the Ys front - in fact, the two Ys IV games weren't directly produced by Falcom themselves but rather by other studios (Tonkin House and Hudsonsoft). Falcom decided it was high time to stop re-releasing Ys I&II over and over again and try to make a fresh, new take on the Ys series. It borrowed many assets from its predecessors, but it broke the barrier into 3D. This game was released for the PC in...

This game makes no sense in relation to the first SiN game, it was supposed to be a whole new story, but well, there aren't or to my knowledge will ever be new episodes to make sense of it all. But it has breasts, drugs, nerd pandering, and railgun pistols. So please watch and enjoy. God of War 2 was released for the Playstation 2 March of 2007 by Santa Monica Studios. By this time the Playstation 3 was already released and the market was drying for Playstation 2 games. Even though it came at the end of the Playstation 2's life, God of War 2 is considered one of the greatest games for that system. Featuring a large improvement on graphics and gameplay, God of War 2 took everything from the first game and turned it up to 11. The game follows the story of Kratos, as he...

Nintendo has a very well refined game design process. They take all their old ideas, put them on a bingo board, and play through a round. All the squares that got covered on the winner's bingo sheet end up in the next game they make. Some time ago, this process went wrong, and a rogue employee jammed some new ideas into a Mario game. The game was New Super Mario Brothers on the DS, and it included moving scenery and something likes a physics system. Nintendo knew that the only way to make...

Donkey Kong 64 is a platformer/collectathon that was released by Rareware for the N64 on Halloween, 1999. It was later rereleased on 12/06/99 packaged with an N64 Expansion Pak, which does all sorts of technical stuff to make the game look really nice. At least, by N64 standards. The game primarily revolves around Donkey Kong and his four other Kong friends and their quest to obtain as many bananas as humanly (simianly?) possible. It is thematically quite similar to Super Mario 64 and the Banjo...

Final Fantasy XII was conceptualized by SquareEnix's Matsuno as part of the Ivalice series of games. Unfortunately due to rumored pressure to get a game out and disputes over such trivial things as the main character, Matsuno left the company for 'health' reasons while FFXII was halfway through development. The result is a game that has some interesting concepts but an inconsistent story and characters. The gameplay itself can be described similarly as interesting with some caveats. The game...

Donkey Kong Country 2 came out in 1995, one year after its predecessor. In that one year Rareware managed to make a game that captured the hearts of monkey fans everywhere, sporting a bigger world, an excellent soundtrack (all hail David Wise), Bonus rooms with a point, more animal buddies, and even a running theme (pirates!). It would be known as one of the greatest platformers on the Super Nintendo (an opinion I will probably drive into your head for the entirety of this LP) as well as having...
